New Reality Fracture Death Combo Could Finally Vindicate MTG Meme Card

A huge part of Magic: The Gathering’s lasting appeal is the community and culture around the game, and the many ways players interact with it. Mine Collapse Combo in MTG Reality Fracture

This new combo came to light thanks to MTGO legend Aspiringspike, who shared a video yesterday going over the Reality Fracture cards that could have legs in Modern. Within this video, the powerful interaction between Hexhaven Invigorator Hexhaven Invigorator Vigilance

Mine Collapse deals 5 damage to target creature or planeswalker. was mentioned. Essentially, if you hit your own Invigorator with a Mine Collapse on turn four, you can tutor up five different lands for an easy combo win.

To pull this off, you first need at least two Mountain/Forest lands, like Stomping Grounds, in play on turn four, plus one extra Mountain to sacrifice to Mine Collapse. Do this and hit Invigorator, and you can search up Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle This land enters tapped.
Whenever a Mountain you control enters, if you control at least five other Mountains, you may have this land deal 3 damage to any target.

Whenever a Forest you control enters, if you control at least five other Forests, target creature you control gets +3/+3 until end of turn.

Continuing down this line, you can keep tutoring up copies of Valakut, Canopy, and Mountains, eventually resulting in a lethal burst of Valakut damage to your opponent’s face. While the execution is a little complicated, the combo really only needs two cards: Invigorator and Mine Collapse. This puts it well within the realm of possibility in Modern, especially since other playable burn spells like Lightning Bolt provide redundancy.

Meme or Dream?

Whether this new combo succeeds or not, it already has a lot of players in the Magic community talking. This is because Mine Collapse, one of its central pieces, has been a recurring meme in the MTG community for years now. This is largely down to ‘Mine Collapse Guy,’ a Reddit user who started buying up copies of the card as a joke a few years back, and who is now sitting on over 5,000 copies, all told.

Following their lead, many other players jumped on the meme bandwagon and bought their own copies, too, creating a bizarre, long-running joke. The humor here is predicated on the fact that Mine Collapse, in a vacuum, is a pretty terrible Magic card. While free spells are almost always powerful, the ‘Sacrifice a Mountain’ cost here is steep, meaning the card has only really seen scattered play until now.

With the advent of Hexhaven Invigorator, however, we could start to see a surge of genuine demand for this card. If this happens, those who followed in Mine Collapse Guy’s footsteps over the years could suddenly find their piles of bulk transformed into items of real value.

While this would be a hilarious and bizarre twist of fate, the price on Mine Collapse looks fairly safe for now. Despite the coordinated effort of many dedicated players, Collapse is still a common from a widely opened set, and therefore readily available. Head over to TCGplayer right now, and you’ll find over 2,900 copies of the card for sale across its various versions. None of these are expensive at all, either, with even the Retro Frame Foil Etched printing sitting at just $0.25 near-mint.

Unless this new Mine Collapse combo does really well, organic demand is unlikely to get through all that supply any time soon. That said, we have seen commons pop off in price before, so there’s still a real chance Mine Collapse soars after Reality Fracture releases. Unlikely, and ultimately undesirable, as that is, it’s hard to deny how funny it would be to see a notoriously worthless MTG card suddenly skyrocket in value.
